| While he had a
highly developed guilty conscience, he retained
the ability to get things wrong with panache!
He started the 1999-2000 shooting season on the new 'posh' shoot by escaping from his lead, and 'doing' the duck pond before everyone was in position (and this was the first drive) amazingly he managed to do it without actually disturbing the ducks - and I escaped severe reprimand, later that same day however, he managed to complete a drive before anyone else was a third of the way through - and this time I was a standing gun (he should have been sitting patiently by my side) the rest of the season was spent pegged by my side when we were standing, and tied to me when we were walking. In 2000 he was a reformed character, working splendidly on all the shoots (even if he did do the 'posh' drives rather faster than was necessary - by now he knew exactly where the birds were likely to be! Then, suddenly, having had a long day's shooting on the saturday, he was violently sick on the Sunday, and was taken to the vets with suspected gastro-enteritis. Anti-biotics had no effect, and the next day he was opened up to see what the problem was, his heart was found to be a pulpy mess, and many of his internal organs had packed up from a lack of a blood supply. He had to be put down, and I was suddenly without a gundog! |
