Wilkins

1989 - 2000

Wilkins (registered name Folieadeux Canute) died at eleven years old. A snapped cruciate ligament in January 1999 (caused by his insistence on jumping over a gate despite his boss suggesting he use the perfectly sized hole next to it!) although fixed and workable (he managed another shooting season) was complicated in spring 2000 by stretching the cruciate ligament on the other side, then straining a front leg during an amorous encounter with St John (Psyche was in season to give him his due!). Effectively bedridden during the summer of 2000 all joints then ceased up with arthritis, and for the last few weeks he grumbled and creaked his way round the garden twice a day.

He was a grand dog and I shall miss his heavy breathing on the shoots (he had nodules on his larynx from about the age of 5 as well!) and his hare coursing exploits - at the age of three he had a hare shot in front of him and was convinced from that date on that he could catch them, and he always set off baying in pursuit. He also had complete faith in my shooting ability - rather more than my own, and would always charge off in search of the quarry as soon as a shot was fired - a mark of a loyal supporter, if not of a good gundog!

Here are Singy and Wilks having surprised a midnight visitor - a visitor that had on the two previous night surprised our ducks and geese - dispatching all our breeding geese and all but one of our ducks.

and didn't he look sweet as a puppy! If you are thinking of buying a spinone - he grew to be quite a lot bigger than the alsation!
